Ski Touring Trip Lofoten | Norway with Mountain Guide
Stay right by the sea in a cosy red rorbu, climb the unique peaks of the Lofoten Islands on skis and experience speedy descents in fresh powder snow. Enjoy the fascinating contrast of white mountains and deep blue sea and end the day relaxing in the sauna by the water.
Highlights
We experience Norway's unique landscape: white mountains, deep blue sea and a fascinating island world. The Lofoten Islands in the far north are a true paradise for ski tours. Here you can ascend from the sea and ski straight back to the shore. A marvellous experience. The region offers a wide variety of possibilities: beautiful birch forests, cool variations and exciting combinations of peaks and tours, including impressive crossings. Together we explore the different corners of the island world by car and choose the best ski tour every day. Our accommodation is a classic rorbu, a cosy red fisherman's cottage right by the sea. After an eventful day in the snow, we enjoy the cosy warmth of the sauna with a view of the water and relax at the end of the day. And with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights will dance across the sky on a clear night. A sight to remember.
Ski touring trip
We stay together for a week in a rorbu, secluded in a quiet bay. From here, we set off every day on a new, varied ski tour and discover the unique island world of Lofoten. The peaks rise up to around 1,000 metres in altitude and offer us many possibilities, from leisurely ascents through open birch forests, which are perfect for powder days in poor visibility, to alpine peaks with exciting descents. We usually ski on slopes around 30° - in safe conditions, we also venture onto more challenging routes. A special highlight: a boat trip with a local skipper to a secluded fjord, where we start our tour directly from the boat. A unique experience in the midst of unspoilt nature. For a culinary change and an insight into Norwegian fishing culture, we visit the charming towns of Svolvær and Henningsvær, which are only a short drive away. This trip combines adventure, nature and culture and makes the Lofoten Islands a ski touring paradise that we will remember for a long time to come.
Procedure and meeting place
The organised trip is from Saturday to Saturday from and to Evens-Harstad-Narvik Airport (EVE). We go on unique ski tours and immerse ourselves in the breathtaking mountain world with its steep rock faces and the glittering sea. We spend the night in a beautiful Rorbu and enjoy the time together in our beautiful home.
We fly from Zurich to Evens-Harstad-Narvik. The flight is not included in the trip and must be organised by yourself. There is a direct Swiss flight, which we recommend travelling on. Of course you can also use another flight or arrive earlier. We will meet at the latest after the arrival of the direct flight at the airport in Evenes. We will continue to Kalle, south of Svolvaer, by hire car. The journey takes around 4 hours, which we shorten with a visit to a good and nice restaurant.
Every day we go on ski tours in breathtaking surroundings. Depending on the weather and snow conditions, the tours are sometimes shorter, sometimes longer. We reach our starting points comfortably with the hire vehicles - so we not only explore different touring areas, but also experience the impressive island landscape of the Lofoten up close. Sightseeing is therefore a matter of course. Every tour offers unique views and unforgettable moments that never cease to amaze us. After an eventful day, we relax in the sauna right by the fjord and enjoy the peace and quiet outside our accommodation.
There is also plenty of culinary variety: depending on our mood, we eat together in restaurants or cook for ourselves.
A special highlight awaits us on one of the days: a boat trip through the fjords - combined with a ski tour in one of the lonely, unspoilt areas. On the last day we will travel back together to the airport in Harstad/Narvik and take the flight back to Zurich. Of course you can also stay longer in Norway.
Requirements
- Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin bends). These are often normal ski tours, as we know them from Switzerland. If possible, we also include tours with passages where we tie on the skis or a foot ascent is included.
- Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow. We often find the most beautiful powder snow. But like everywhere else, the weather can do what it wants.
- Condition for 1000m of ascent at a leisurely pace over a week. Sometimes we will do less than 1000m and sometimes more. We divide the tours so that we have enough energy for all days!
- Splitboarders are welcome.

Questions and answers about ski touring in Lofoten and how to see the Northern Lights while enjoying powder descents to the sea ?¿
Why are the Lofoten Islands famous for ski touring?
The Lofoten Islands offer a spectacular backdrop of snow-covered mountains that drop down into the deeply carved fjords. In addition to perfect ski touring mountains, mighty granite walls characterise the landscape and create an impressive scenery in the middle of the Arctic archipelago. You will often find excellent snow here! In addition to many moderate and leisurely ski touring options, there are also exciting couloirs and challenging lines for ambitious ski tourers. In short: impressive mountains, fantastic ski touring opportunities, branching fjords, often great snow - and with a bit of luck, the Northern Lights dancing across the sky in the evening.
What is the best way to travel to Lofoten?
The Lofoten Islands are easy to reach. There are once again direct flights from Zurich to Narvik-Evens (EVE) every two days. It is also possible to travel by train and night train. This takes about 2.5 days and you experience the journey through the snow-covered forests of Sweden.
How do you pay in Lofoten?
In Lofoten you can only pay by credit card. It is not necessary to bring cash.
Snow and conditions
What is the weather like in Lofoten?
The weather in the Lofoten Islands is varied and can change quickly. Within a few days, stable high-pressure conditions with sunshine and little wind are just as possible as stormy snowfalls and rapid weather changes. The proximity to the sea ensures comparatively mild temperatures for these latitudes - the thermometer is usually around -10 °C, occasionally milder. Wind is a frequent companion and should always be taken into account when planning a tour. Overall, flexibility and good preparation are key to making the most of the changeable conditions.
Where can I find information on avalanches and terrain?
Norway operates an app for map material and an avalanche situation report. Local entries can also be viewed here. However, the categorised areas are generally very large and therefore imprecise. You still have to make your own judgements and decisions on the ground. The You can find maps at Norgeskart and the Avalanche report at Varsom.
