The Grand Combin in the evening sun

The Grand Combin is a mighty four-thousand metre peak in the heart of the Valais Alps. Remote and impressive! The best time to climb it is in late spring, because only then are the snow conditions really good. Thanks to the local taxi driver, we set off up the mountain to reach the hut on skis on the first day. On the second day, we set off very early to reach the foot of the northern flank of the Grand Combin via the Glacier de Corbassière. We climb through the "Couloir du Gardien" with crampons and ice axe to the summit plateau, where we reach the Combin du Valsorey and the Combin de Grafeneire. On the descent, we reach "La Mur", a steep ice passage that we overcome by abseiling to reach "Le Corridor". After a short ascent, we reach the 3rd summit of the Combins: Combin de la Tsessette. From here we ski down on a glacier terrace and enjoy the spring sunshine and the marvellous slope. A long and impressive day at over 4,000 metres! On the last day, we decide where and how to ski depending on the conditions. There are a few shorter ski tours to leave the valley and return home happy and full of memories.

Today is the big day. We set off very early and first cross the cosy glacier to the start. The Couloir du Gardien leads steeply up a few hundred metres, first with skis and then with crampons. There are often a few metres of bare ice. Here we climb up secured in pitches, with ice axe and crampons. On the plateau, we first climb the Combin de Valsorey and then the main summit. The descent is via "La Mur". A steep flank. We often abseil down here. Now comes the last Combin summit, the Combin de la Tsessette. The descent via the corridor is pleasant and often powdery for a long time! We return to the hut happy and cheerful after a long day. This tour leads under glacier collapses at the couloir and the corridor. There is therefore an objective risk of icefall. Of course, we try to minimise this time.

    • Day 3

On the last day, we have the option of making a leisurely descent in around 3 hours to rest our legs. If the weather is good and we are fit, we can also do the Petit Combin as a ski tour. We will decide this the evening before.
