This four-day ski traverse takes us through one of the most spectacular ski touring areas in the Alps. The starting point is Zermatt, surrounded by legendary peaks such as the Matterhorn, Dent Blanche and Weisshorn. We make our tracks across wide glaciers, cross impressive passes and experience a varied combination of enjoyable descents and exciting ascents. We spend the night in cosy, serviced huts such as the Schönbielhütte and the Cabane des Vignettes, where we round off the day with fine food and a convivial atmosphere. On the last day, a long, impressive final descent to Arolla awaits - the perfect end to this unique crossing. A tour for all those who are looking for a classic ski tour experience and at the same time want to enjoy the high alpine flair of the Valais mountains to the full.

  • Procedure and meeting place

    • Meeting place

      approx. 10 a.m. Kiosk Zermatt railway station

      We meet at the railway station in Zermatt, where your mountain guide will give you a warm welcome. Together we will walk through the village to the valley station of the Schwarzsee cable car, discuss the day's itinerary and then set off on our adventure.

    • Day 1 - Ascent Schwarzsee & approach Schönbielhütte

      The cable car takes us to Schwarzsee station in a short time. From here we set off on a marvellous descent, always with the Matterhorn in view, down to the Zmutt Glacier. From there, we make a leisurely ascent until we finally reach the Schönbielhütte. Our first stage destination and overnight stop. Here we round off the day with fine food and a convivial atmosphere.

    • Day 2 - Over the legendary Tete Blanche to Arolla

      A real highlight awaits us today: the ascent and crossing of the famous Tête Blanche. Surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Valais Alps, we climb steadily higher until we reach the glacier pass and can enjoy an impressive panorama. Once at the top, we prepare for the final, long descent. We make our way down to Arolla through impressive glacier and alpine touring terrain. Once there, we bring the tour to a cosy close and spend the night in a local hotel.

    • Day 3 - Approach Cabanne des Vignettes

      In the morning, a ski lift makes the first part of the ascent easier. We then climb steadily higher at a leisurely pace over the Glacier de Pièces, enjoying the view of the surrounding peaks and glacier landscapes. Our destination is the Cabane des Vignettes, one of the most famous huts in the region and a classic stage stop on the Haute Route. Once there, we fortify ourselves with a delicious dinner and prepare for the final, long stage the next day.

    • Day 4 - Crossing Pigne d`Arolla

      Early in the morning, we set off on the last stage of our crossing. In the first light of the day, we climb steadily higher and finally reach the summit of the Pigne d'Arolla. An impressive finale with breathtaking views of the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks. After a well-earned rest at the summit, we enjoy the long descent over the Pas de Chèvres, where some short, exciting passages await us. Afterwards, we glide through marvellous terrain down into the valley to Arolla. Our four-day ski traverse ends there, filled with great experiences, new impressions and lasting moments in the heart of the Valais Alps.

    • Conclusion

      We say goodbye to each other in Arolla and travel back home individually with many new impressions.

  • Requirements

    • Mastering the ski touring technique with its basics (skins, hairpin turns).
    • Safe downhill technique in open terrain and in different types of snow.
    • You have first experience with ice axe and crampons.
    • Condition for ski tours with around 1000hm at a comfortable pace (~300hm/h).
    • Condition for 1000m of descent in different types of snow.
    • In addition, there are sections where we carry the skis and trudge through the snow.
    • Splitboarders are welcome, provided they are experienced.

    • CHF 1195.-
    • Small group with 4 - 6 guests per mountain guide.
    • Including planning and realisation with mountain guide and his travel expenses.
    • Including overnight stays in huts with half board.
    • Excluding travel expenses, possible train tickets, personal consumption.

Accommodation

  • Schönbielhütte

    The Schönbielhütte is located above Zermatt at the foot of the mighty north face of the Matterhorn. Surrounded by imposing glaciers and impressive four-thousand metre peaks, it is the perfect starting point for ski tours and high-altitude tours in the Dent d'Hérens, Dent Blanche and Zmutt glacier area. The cosy, serviced hut offers everything we need after a long day in the mountains: a warm room, delicious food and simple multi-bed rooms.

  • Séjour Edelweiss Arolla

    The Séjour Edelweiss is located in the small mountain village of Arolla, at the end of the Val d'Hérens. The charming house offers cosy rooms, a warm parlour and a warm, family atmosphere. Here you can relax after a long day in the high alpine terrain.

  • Cabane des Vignettes

    The Cabane des Vignettes is located at 3158 metres above Arolla in the middle of an impressive high alpine landscape. Surrounded by mighty glaciers and framed by famous peaks such as the Pigne d'Arolla, the Mont Collon and the Eveque, the hut offers a spectacular panorama and genuine high-mountain flair. As one of the best-known huts on the Haute Route, it is a classic stop-off point on ski crossings and high-altitude ski tours. The hut offers cosy comfort with a cosy parlour, multi-bed rooms and a sunny terrace.

Information on endurance and technique

Here you will find the organisation of our tours as a guideline. If you are unsure which level suits you best, feel free to get in touch - We can help you!

Technics

Technology 1 - for beginners

Easy tours, suitable for beginners. The terrain is easy and moderate. No previous mountaineering experience is necessary.

Ski toursSafe skiing on the black piste in the ski area. No previous knowledge of ski touring necessary.

Technique 2 - Leisurely tours

Easy to slightly challenging tours with short, steeper sections that we master together and with coaching. You are ready for this level after a basic or taster course.

Ski toursFirst off-piste experience up to approx. 30° slope gradient. You have mastered the basic techniques of ski touring and have some experience of hairpin bends.

Technique 3 - Medium tours

Medium-difficulty tours with short, technical sections that are easy to do with some previous experience. You have already done a few tours and feel confident with your equipment and technique.

Ski toursYou are confident in off-piste terrain up to a slope angle of approx. 35° and are proficient in hairpin bends in a variety of terrain. 

Technique 4 - First big tours

Challenging tours with longer, steeper passages that require a good level of experience and skill. We secure these sections with ropes and coach you through difficult sections. Suitable for adventure-seekers with solid basic training.

Ski toursSafe skiing in steep off-piste terrain (up to approx. 40°), solid hairpin technique. First experience with rope manoeuvres, such as roping up on the glacier and abseiling.

Technique 5 - Grand tours

Very demanding tours, with technical passages that require a good level of experience and skill. These are secured, but smooth, rapid progress is required. For experienced climbers with plenty of experience and a thirst for adventure.

Ski toursYou are a very safe skier on steep, unsecured terrain. You are a master of hairpin turns in difficult conditions and have experience with rope manoeuvres and glacier equipment.

Endurance

Endurance 1 - Easy tours

Easy tours with plenty of time to take a break and enjoy.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 500 - 800 metres per day, 
  • Pace: approx. 250 - 300 m / h.
Endurance 2 - Leisurely tours

"Normal" tour at a leisurely pace with 800 - 1000 vertical metres per day, ~300 hm / h.

Endurance 3 - Medium tours

Longer tours at a steady, fluid pace. A solid basic level of fitness is required here.

  • Elevation gain: approx. 1200 metres per day
  • Pace: approx. 350 m / h.
Endurance 4 - First big tours

Long and challenging tours at a brisk but constant pace. Ideal for active sports enthusiasts.

  • Elevation gain: up to 1500 metres per day
  • Pace: approx. 350 m / h.
Endurance 5 - Long tours

Very long tours with more than 1500 metres in altitude per day. Requires very good fitness and stamina.

  • Elevation metres: 1500 m + per day
  • Pace: approx. 400 m / h.
